The LIFE + Programme of the European Union selected the project submitted by LKS

The project presented by the consortium made up of the engineering division of LKS, Azti, Georama and Ihobe, has been selected within the LIFE + Programme of the European Commission. This program funds innovative projects related to environmental conservation and sustainable development in rural and urban areas.

The project, called GISWASTE, entitled "GIS-based methodology for prioritizing alternatives of agro-food waste recovery in the Basque Country", aims to develop a methodology and GIS-based computer tool that simulates the technical, economic and environmental viability of the valuation alternatives (biogas and animal feeding) for agro-food byproducts (mainly vegetables, meat and milk products) in the Basque Country, through the location of the possible implementations.

This project will help mitigating emissions of greenhouse gases and minimizing the effects of climate change in the Basque Country; also halting the loss of biodiversity, restoring ecosystems and limiting soil artificialization; promoting the efficient use of the resources and the responsible consumption and achieving a clean and healthy environment.

The work will last from July 15, 2013 to June 30, 2017.
