Puerto Venecia, Spain’s largest Shopping Centre receives LEED GOLD for sustainability

Puerto Venecia, Zaragoza (Spain), has recently received the prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council, the renowned coalition of leaders in sustainable building design and construction.  LEED is an international certification system that evaluates the sustainability of a building from design through to construction.

The complex of buildings, owned by Orion European Real Estate Fund III, is Spain’s largest retail and leisure centre with over 206,000 m2 (2,217,365 sq ft) of gross leasable floor area. Puerto Venecia is the first Shopping Centre in Spain to receive LEED GOLD.

The developers of the scheme, Puerto Venecia Investments, ensured that the centre complied with all of the USGBC’s prerequisites for GOLD certification by integrating state of the art measures which guarantee exceptional energy efficiency, waste management and indoor air quality.

The Spanish consulting firm LKS has coordinated the complete certification process.

Puerto Venecia opened to the public in October 2012 and welcomes 18 million visitors every year.  Over the past twelve months the centre has been awarded with the 2013 MAPIC Award for Best Retail and Leisure Development, the 2014 Spanish Shopping Centre Association Award for Best Spanish Large Shopping & Leisure Centre and the Government of Aragon Tourism Medal of Merit.
