LKS develops the public participation stage of the Eco-restoration project of the Adyar River in Chennai (India)

LKS has been involved in the development of several project presentation sessions to citizens, institutions, organizations governments and other authorities involved.

Adyar river is one of the waterways which drain through Chennai City and its metropolitan area.  The scope of works includes the development of the river Master Plan from its source to its mouth, throughout more than 42 kms. The project includes a pollution abatement procedure, maintening a basic ecological flow, reclaiming and protecting the river from potential encroachments, improving the flood carrying capacity, a new river front development and the integration of new activities along the river.
The aim of the meetings was to get the general public involved in the development of the project once the diagnosis had been made, to present early proposals to be developed; and. finally, as part of the process started in June 2013, which involved the authorities in this project, to give them an update of the project development.

Three sessions took place, the first one was aimed for the general public, and a different one for non-governmental organizations and academic institutions. In the later one, there were many interventions and contributions. The local media echoed the presentations in leading publications of the country, both in English and Tamil. The presentation to the general public will be replicated in order to reach as many people as possible. The third session, for administrations and other authorities involved, was attended by most of the agents who will manage the proposals development. This last session served as a work seminar, and intersector coordination, a key aspect to the success of future management, development and project implementation.

The project, including the detailed development of different proposals, is scheduled for completion in 2014.  Following the public participation stage there will be an analysis, evaluation and incorporation of the suggestions, proposals and considerations concerning the scope and objectives of the project.
