LKS finishes the works for the cold storage platform in Mercapalma (Palma de Mallorca, Spain)

The works for the construction of the cold-storage logistic platform for Si-Gla in Mercapalma will be completed this month. LKS carried out the design and the project management of these works. It is a newly built platform on a 19,000 m² plot with a 11,000 m² built area, 10,000 m² of which are a cold store and the rest is divided in offices, control and auxiliary facilities.

This platform was designed for the storage and distribution of both fresh and frozen products and will be added to the “dry product” logistic platform also designed by LKS in 2008.

The new plant includes significant technological advances in the distribution sector in order to reduce energy consumption and minimize environmental impact. These progresses are focused on the design of the facilities and civil engineering works and the most relevant are as follows: a cold production plant that uses CO2 as the refrigerant in order to obtain a high energy performance with almost zero environmental impact; light emitting diode (LED)  light fittings installed with 60% energy savings; a BMS (Building Management System) control system for the three energy consuming systems (lighting, air conditioning and industrial cooling), which monitors consumption and manages performances in order to achieve the highest efficiency; lightweight, highly insulated external walls (200mm) achieve significant reductions in energy demand; and industrial solutions for approximately 70% of the building components reduce time and costs improving safety and health conditions as well as reducing on site waste generation.
